THE METEORA is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area.
NAFPLION – the “Venice” of Greece Modern architecture hasn’t spoiled the old town of Nafplion, which is a feast for the eye. Nafplion was the capital of the Greek state, The old town is beautiful, with old mansions and paved roads. The town’s fortresses, the Palamidi and the Akronafplia, played a key role during the war of independence. The Venetian influence is everywhere justifying the town’s name as the “Greek Venice”.`
OLYMPIA, was the location of the ancient Olympic Games, with the first recorded win in 776 BC. In addition to the numerous temples and sanctuaries, there are remains of sporting structures, such as the ancient Stadium, the Gymnasium, the Palaestra and others.
DELPHI – The famous “temple bank”. The pan-Hellenic sanctuary of the oracle of Apollo in Delphi, was the spiritual centre of the Greek world. Situated in a spectacular natural setting on the mountain of Parnassus, it was the symbol of Greek cultural unity from the 8th c. BC onwards.
Leave by the coast alroad to the Corinth Canal (short stop). Drive on and visit the Theatre of Epidaurus , famous for its remarkable acoustics. Then proceed to the town of Nafplion. Afternoon free. Overnight. (Dinner).
Morning free. Depart around 12:30 for My cenae and visit the Archaeological Site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Then depart for Olympia through Central Peloponnese and the towns of Tripoli and Megalopolis. Overnight in Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic Games. (Dinner).
In the morning visit the Archaeological Site with the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Stadium and the Archaeological Museum. Then drive on through the plains of Ilia and Achaia until the magnificent bridge which is crossing the Corinthian Bay from Rionto Antirion. Pass by the pictures quet owns of Naupactus (Lepanto )and Itea, arrive in Delphi. Overnight . (Dinner).
In the morning visit the Archaeological Site and the Museum. Depart for Kalambaka, a small town stated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora, gigantic crocks. Overnight. (Dinner).
Visit Meteora, among striking scenery perched on top of huge rocks which seem to be suspended in mid-air, stand age less Monasteries, where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine Art. Return to Athens via Trikala, Lamia, Thermopylae (shorts top to see across the road the Leonida’s Monument). Arrive in Athens early in the evening.
